Core values are something which are inculcated into a professional from their past professional experience through individual or corporate. As an individual progresses in his career path these values are passively stored in his/her personality traits.
Many of the organizations fail to understand its importance and value in enterprise execution model. Just like every nation in the world has their own national flag or national emblem. It is very crucial in current times for an organizations to identify, define, develop and foster the growth of these organizational core values.
Organizational core values act as a catalyst in every project execution therefore, many start-ups or agile methodology driven companies encourage, demonstrate and purely run on fuel of core values.
In 1965, a psychologist named Bruce Tuckman said that teams go through 5 stages of development: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. The stages start from the time that a group first meets until the project ends.
Governance layer of an organization plays a vital role in identifying and selection of right candidate whose individual core values are inline with the organizational core values. It may or may not be necessary to seek for candidates matching all of the values even one or two would be sufficient enough to become a member of the team. Whenever a new member joins the team then as per the above illustrated diagram (Tuckman's 5 stage of team development) we see that, Every team goes through a 5 stage of team development lifecycle.
Majority of the project failures occures at storming stage wherein the team is in chaos and there exists constant communication gaps, false egos, frustration, conflicts etc. On performing a Root Cause Analysis on this stage, you will find that every team members inculcated different core values which resulted into heavy loss for the project, customer and enterprise. A team comprising up of members with the same core values easily overcome this storming stage and quickly move on to performing stage.
It is important to note that - Not just recruitment, but fostering the growth of organizational core value is also of an utmost importance. It is key responsibility of the governance layer within an organization to support, promote and demonstrate the activities pertaining to core values.
